Home / Services / Menlo Park

Menlo Park asks for two kinds of builder. Allied Arts is an Eichler neighborhood with its own architectural character, and a remodel that ignores the post-and-beam house will fight both the structure and the neighbors. West of El Camino, lots get larger and the work shifts toward custom additions, new homes, and a higher level of millwork.

Downtown cottages and The Willows are a third case: smaller houses, some of them in mapped flood areas near the bay. An addition there starts with the flood question and the side yard, not with a catalog kitchen.

We handle design and build, room additions, kitchens, baths, and specialty trim and cabinetry. The shop is in Redwood City, close enough that Menlo Park site visits are a normal weekday drive. Details live on the services page.

The houses

Allied Arts is not Felton Gables

Allied Arts homes are Eichlers. Atriums, globe lights, and a low roof are not styling you swap for a farmhouse gable. If you want the house updated, we work inside that vocabulary: kitchens, baths, careful additions, and systems, without pretending it should look like a new Tudor.

Felton Gables, University Heights, and the west side hold larger traditional houses. Custom homes, second-story work, and full kitchen rebuilds are more common there, and Menlo Park planning will look hard at height and at windows that face a neighbor.

Linfield Oaks, Suburban Park, and Flood Park are family streets with a mix of mid-century houses. Downtown and The Willows are older and tighter. Vintage Oaks has its own mid-century stock. We write the scope for the block, not for a county average.

What we run into

Beams, flood zones, and second stories

Allied Arts additions fail when they break the beam lines or push a tall roof over a low one. We draw the structure with the design so the house still reads as an Eichler from the street.

Parts of The Willows and other bay-side blocks sit in flood zones. A new slab or a finished floor at the wrong height becomes a permit problem. We check that before we fall in love with a plan.

Second stories in Menlo Park draw neighbor comments. The honest schedule includes planning time. Interior kitchens and baths that keep the shell move faster, and they still need a panel and plumbing check on houses from the 1950s.

Planning numbers

What Menlo Park homeowners should budget

An Allied Arts kitchen that respects the structure and still gets new cabinets, stone, and lighting commonly sits in the same Peninsula band as other serious remodels, about $90,000 to $250,000, with slab plumbing moves adding cost. Larger west-side remodels and custom additions price closer to new-home work. Room additions often run $500 to $800 per square foot. A ground-up custom home on a Menlo Park lot is a seven-figure build once design and permits are included.

Allow a few months for Menlo Park planning if the exterior or the second story changes. A contained interior remodel is often three to six months from the first visit to the walkthrough.

Do you remodel Eichlers in Allied Arts?

Yes. We plan around the post-and-beam frame, the low roof, and the atrium. We will not sell you a remodel that only works if the house stops being an Eichler.

Can you build a custom home in Menlo Park?

Yes, where the lot and the town's rules allow a new house or a full rebuild. Design, foundation, framing, and drainage are part of that service.

What if my house is in a flood zone?

We treat the finished floor and the foundation as a permit item, not a surprise. Say so when you call if you already have a flood letter.

How do site visits work?

Call (650) 364-1838. We come from 260 Topaz Street in Redwood City, usually within a week or two, on weekdays.

These ranges are for planning. A proposal comes after we see the house. Start with the service list or a visit.
